Mike and Krystyna Woodings' boat No.9

Our new home - a 1925 Luxemotor Barge - 22.1m x 4.2m

We purchased Janna in April 2007 with the intention to move our home from our narrow boat Draco to her after a partial refit. Janna is still berthed on a drying tidal mooring at Swale Marina, Conyer, Teynham, Nr. Sittingbourne. I am trying to research her history and so far can only confirm that she was built in Alkmaar, Holland circa 1925. She was not originally named Janna, this naming came from the owner who had her converted from a cargo vessel to a residential boat in the early 1950's. The previous name we have not yet found out, Janna (pronounced yanna) was the name of the 1950's owner's aunt.

Dateline April 2008: we 'escaped' from Swale Marina and will be continuously cruising the non-tidal Thames for the majority of the rest of the year.

I started the partial refit during June 2007 after I took early retirement from NATS and it is to all intents-and-purposes now completed. There are some changes planned for the Master's bedroom (our bedroom and the only fixed sleeping accommodation in our plans) during this year and Krystyna's studio has now turned into a storage cabin for her arts and craft materials, Krystyna using the rest of the boat as her work area! We still have some general tidying up to do and of course the ongoing internal and external decoration - planned colour chages for outside!

The main refit consisted of the following (the links will take you to separate pages with before and after pictures, etc):

- the provision of a pressurised fresh water system and bulk water tanks (the original small water tank was on the galley roof and the system was gravity fed)

- a sanitation tank with the ability to either pump-out normally, or to sea, and removal of the installed macerator sea-toilet

- a full bathroom

- a complete new galley

- a full 12/240v electrical system (the existing system was solely 240v and relied on a shore line being connected)

- minor layout changes and new floor covering in the saloon

- various internal cosmetic improvements and external repaint in new colours (Krystyna's artistic influence here of course - work in progress)

Another change to our original plans ( like all plans - especially mine - they are always up for change!) is that we still have our narrow boat Draco, which we shall be moving down here to us on the Thames this year.
